Doerkson’s plan to scrap Massey Tunnel replacement completely irresponsible

BC Conservative leader shows fundamental lack of understanding of infrastructure development

BC Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson’s irresponsible promise to scrap the Massey Tunnel replacement project should concern British Columbians.

Significant work on the project has been underway for nine months with more than 200 workers on site this year alone. $581 million has been spent on the project as of the latest monthly update in June.

Trees have been cleared, utilities re-located and multiple pieces of project-supporting temporary infrastructure constructed. An environmental assessment is imminent and the project is expected to begin major construction in a matter of months.

“Promising to scrap this project and start all over again is reckless and wasteful,” said Bryan Railton, Business Manager for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115.

“If Doerkson is serious about this, he’s showing a fundamental lack of understanding of the procurement and construction of major infrastructure. That lack of knowledge could really hurt British Columbians.”

Adding to the recklessness of Doerkson’s promise, the federal government has committed up to $3 billion to support the construction of the Massey Tunnel replacement project. By scrapping the project, that crucial funding would be put at risk.

“Wasting $581 million in construction costs and turning away a $3-billion investment from the federal government would be financially negligent,” said Railton.

“This promise shows the BC Conservatives are more serious about waging ideological battles against their political enemies than delivering infrastructure for British Columbians.”
