Better training, more safety: Expansion of Skilled Trades Certification good for B.C.

International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115 supports expansion for mobile and tower crane operators

The expansion of Skilled Trades Certification for mobile and tower crane operators will lead to better safety at construction sites and a more highly trained workforce in British Columbia.

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115 (IUOE 115) strongly supports this news from the provincial government and SkilledTradesBC.

“Today marks an important milestone, not just for the thousands of highly skilled tower and mobile crane operators who help build British Columbia every day, but for everyone who lives and works in this province,” said Bryan Railton, Business Manager for IUOE 115.

“Restoring Skilled Trades Certification for crane operators is about more than recognizing a trade. It is about ensuring the highest standards of training, professionalism and safety on every jobsite.”

Ever since the provincial government decertified all trades back in 2003, crane safety has been a concern on construction sites. Unfortunately, the lack of safety training has contributed to numerous crane incidents that have caused death and injury. Today’s announcement is a positive first step in rectifying those safety issues.

“The work our members perform carries tremendous responsibility, and British Columbians deserve the confidence of knowing that the people operating cranes have the skills, knowledge and qualifications that certified trades demand,” said Railton.

“I want to thank the Province of British Columbia and SkilledTradesBC for working with industry and labour to correct this longstanding issue. Today’s announcement strengthens our industry, improves public safety and reinforces the value of the skilled trades that continue to build this province.”

Beginning July 6, 2026, people working as tower or mobile crane operators will have one year to register as an apprentice with SkilledTradesBC or challenge the certification exam and become a journeyperson before certification requirements take effect on July 5, 2027.
