IUOE member honoured with award

Allan Bruce, one of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115’s most dedicated advocates for training, has been honoured with a national award recognizing his achievements.

Allan is the recipient of the third biennial Darryl Cruickshank Memorial Award, presented by the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeships in early June.

The award “recognizes an individual’s outstanding contribution to apprenticeship and the skilled trades,” said Gary Herman, Interim CEO for the Industry Training Authority in BC. “Allan Bruce has been a champion of trades training for over 30 years and is most-deserving of this prestigious award.

IUOE Local 115 Business Manager Brian Cochrane said Bruce has been an inspiration to several generations of operating engineers.

“There are not too many people who can say they literally helped build British Columbia but Allan Bruce certainly can – apprentices he encouraged and trained have been involved in most major projects in this province,” Cochrane said.

Allan begin his career as a mobile crane operator and trades instructor before becoming administrator of the Operating Engineers Training Association and then an international representative whose passion has always been training. He retired in 2012 but sits on several boards, including the Asia Pacific Gateway Skills Table and Skills Canada.
