LIGHT EQUIPMENT COURSES

The following courses will introduce students to common types of mobile equipment used in industry. Training can be arranged for IUOE Local 115 members or signatory employers at our Maple Ridge training site or at the employer’s worksite, if appropriate.

New certification course: 1 day of theory, half day of practical training
(1.5 days of training)
Learn provincial safety regulations, machine systems, and how to handle a rough terrain telehandler. Participants will learn how to consult an owner’s manual and interpret the manufacturer’s load chart to determine lifting capacities.

Re-Certification Course: half day of theory, half day of practical training
(1 day of training)
Applicants for re-certification must provide prior certification or proof of experience from a current employer.

This course is designed for experienced telehandler operators. Participants will review the fundamentals of operating a rough terrain telehandler and will learn to interpret information and load chart capacities from the owner’s manual.

Evaluation is based on a written exam and a test of practical skills. Participants must pass the written exam with a 70 per cent score to move on to the practical assessment. A certificate is awarded to successful participants. It is valid for two years.

This program does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. As such, PTIB did not review this program.

The Blended Forklift course combines online theory learning and face-to-face theory and practical assessments.

The online theory learning consists of six modules and is self-paced. Completion requires approximately four hours.

This course was developed by the IVES training group. Participants will gain an understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of Aerial Lift/Scissor Lift operation and safe use. A certificate in Fall Protection Awareness is a prerequisite.

Re-certification course: half day of theory, 1.5 hours of practical assessment
Applicants for re-certification must provide prior certification or proof of experience from a current employer.

This course is designed for experienced aerial lift operators. Participants will review the fundamentals of operating a forklift and review safety procedures and current regulations.

Evaluation is based on a written exam and a test of practical skills. Participants must pass the written exam with a 70 per cent score to move on to the practical assessment. A certificate is awarded to successful participants. It is valid for two years.

One full day of training (approximately 8 hours)
We strongly recommend that our Rigging Level 1 (4 hours) or Level 2 (8 hours) program be taken in conjunction with your Overhead Crane training to offer the highest level in safety training.

We deliver this all-inclusive program at your location using your overhead crane. Your overhead crane operator’s manual and any overhead crane policies and procedures will be integrated into the delivery of this complete program.

SAFETY COURSES

The following safety courses are available on an in-person basis. Training can be arranged if requested by IUOE Local 115 members or signatory employers, and can be conducted at our Maple Ridge training site, a third-party trainer’s site, or an employer’s worksite, if appropriate.

Half day of theory, half day of practical training (1 day of training)
This course will make you aware of hazards in the work site that may cause falls. It includes an introduction to various protection systems, as well as components of a fall arrest system. Once completed, participants will be able to perform a pre-use equipment inspection and be trained in how to reduce or eliminate fall hazards. Participants will be suspended from a harness at some point during the course.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Recognizing the requirement for fall protection
  • Identifying and describing major fall protection methods and associated protection equipment
  • Explaining and applying the fall protection hierarchy
  • Determining when a fall protection plan is required and describing the major components
  • Developing a Fall Protection Plan based on a given scenario
  • Safety monitoring
  • Checking and putting on a fall arrest harness properly and safely

This course can be customized or extended depending on the customer’s requirements.

This is a proven 4-hour classroom course focused on fundamental rigging theory. This safety course is designed for construction and industrial workers, and for those who currently work with or intend to work with rigging. Because of a 4-hour delivery time, Level 1 offers limited theory exercises, and a practical session and practical evaluation are not available. Only established industry instructors deliver our rigging courses.

The written theory assessment requires a score of 70% or better for successful course completion. Successful rigging participants will receive a Rigging Level 1 certificate that is recognized at British Columbia construction and industrial job sites.

This is a proven 8-hour safety course delivering combined theory with instructor-led exercises and a practical session. The selected theory exercises are designed to engage and confirm participants’ rigging knowledge. This safety course is designed for construction and industrial work, and for those who currently work with or intend to work with rigging. Only established industry instructors deliver our rigging courses.
