Participants will learn rigging theory and practical applications specific to the tower crane industry. This safety course will enhance entry-level and experienced riggers’ knowledge, skills, and abilities. The course will also benefit tower crane pre-apprentices, apprentices, and operators.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Identifying tower crane rigger responsibilities and how to complete a rigger’s logbook
  • Differentiating between rigging regulations, standards, and polices
  • Categorizing metal and synthetic sling types and implementing their inspections
  • Determining load weights and attributing the centre of gravity
  • Identifying fundamental sling hitches
  • Analyzing choke hitches, determining sling angles, and interpreting a rigger’s pocket guide
  • Breaking down sling tension effects and calculating sling tension
  • Performing tower crane hand signals and 2-way radio communications
  • Hypothesizing tower crane test lifts

This course is delivered in class. Day 1 (8 hours) is indoor theory, and Day 2 (8 hours) is hands-on practical outdoors. Prior reading of course material is encouraged to improve success.

Rigging theory lessons are delivered lecture style with the application of PowerPoints, handouts, and targeted exercises. The rigging practical lessons are delivered by instructor-led demonstrations, facilitation, and targeted exercises. Participants will be assessed in rigging theory with verbal pop quizzes and a written assessment. The rigging practical will be assessed by completing all rigging exercises safely.

In order to receive your certification, all participants must attend both days in full and receive a minimum 70% theory assessment grade along with safely completing their practical assessment.

This course is open to all people interested in working in and around tower cranes.

English Language competency for individuals that don’t have a GED or Grade 12 equivalency from Canada, may be required.

Upon completion of the 2-day tower crane rigging course you are issued a course completion certificate, valid for two years.

No, you do not need a Class 3 or Class driver’s licence to operate a tower crane. We recommend that you have a minimum Class 5 driver’s licence so that you can gain access to a job site where public transportation is not accessible.

Tower Crane Riggers must meet the physical demands of the trade, including heavy lifting of crane components and rigging, climbing, working at heights, and placing the body in awkward positions during crane assembly and setup. You must also be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and be prepared to perform these tasks for long periods of time.

Although previous experience is an asset, it is not required to apply for the training program.

No. The tower crane rigging course is two 8-hour days. The course may be scheduled on weekdays and weekends as required.

Employment opportunities through the Union will vary over time depending on the demands from industry. Upon completion of any levels of technical training, you will be eligible to book into our Union Job Board. However, to stay on the board, it is your responsibility to check in with your Training Coordinator. There is no guarantee of dispatch or job placements.

No. You do not need to be a Local 115 member to be able to apply for or take our training courses.

If you complete one of our training courses, to become a Local 115 member you must be dispatched to one of our Local 115 union companies and complete three months of work. If you pass your three months of probation, you can be eligible to become a member with IUOE Local 115.
